Thanks MSU

PHEW! My Michigan State Spartans finally pulled off a win this weekend! I can breathe now. For those who don't know, the Spartans bounced back from their 38-3 lag in the third quarter to beat the Wildcats, 41-38, the greatest comeback in Division I-A history. Now, the reason why I'm writing this particular entry has absolutely nothing to do with Northwestern, but everything to do with the University of Michigan.

While I perused the produce section at Kroger yesterday, in my green MSU hoodie, one of the employees stopped me to congratulate me on the MSU win. The guy was also wearing a U of M baseball cap. He is also the umpteenth Michigan fan this year to tell me he cheers for MSU. WHAT? A Michigan fan cheers for Michigan State? Uh, hello, is that nice or what? What's funny is how competitive us Spartan fans are when it comes to the University of Michigan. My boyfriend is a University of Michigan graduate, and he's always maintained that a lot of U of M fans cheer for MSU, except for when we face them on game day. That makes sense obviously. He says that even the thousands of fans who gather at the Big House year after year also roar with excitement in support of MSU when Big 10 scores are flashed on the screen. What happens at Spartan Stadium when the U of M score flashes on the screen? Regardless of who they're playing, Spartan fans boo the University of Michigan. We boo LOUDLY! As a student, I booed U of M every chance I got. I still do the same as an alumna.

Yeah, U of M considers Ohio State to be their BIG rival, but they consider MSU a friendly rivalry. For Michigan State fans, such a game is anything BUT friendly. I, like thousands of MSU fans, look forward to the yearly matchup. Remember 2001? Remember when we beat the Wolverines in the last second, and how beautiful that moment was?

Anyway, maybe it has something to do with the fact that I live in the same neighborhood as the University of Michigan? I don't know. But what I do know is this: despite the ferocious, competitive spirits of us Spartans, I have found some U of M fans to be super cool. I'm not slagging on my beloved MSU either. Those of you who know me best know I absolutely LOVE my alma mater. Michigan State University is truly fantastic: there is not a finer university in the state of Michigan. We know this. But I have to give some props to U of M fans. There are some nice ones out there.

  • MacKenzie, your opinion and comments demonstrate an insightful and mature observation of the currently angry and frustrated MSU football fan. Maybe, someday, I will grow up and cheer on U of M. But, probably not.
